The outbreak has spread more quickly and has a higher number of infected than Texas did last year.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is providing South Carolina with 1.4 million in requested aid. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is assisting state health officials in tracking transmission and coordinating the state’s response.
The state has experienced the largest measles outbreak seen in the U.S. since the disease was declared eradicated in the 2000s. The South Carolina measles outbreak, which began in October, has surpassed 800 cases and has spread more quickly than the Texas outbreak did late last year. Though two children died in Texas, no deaths have been recorded in South Carolina.
The South Carolina Department of Public Health has published a list of exposure sites and places to receive free measles (MMR and MMRV) vaccinations. Officials encourage “people who were exposed, especially those without immunity through vaccination or previous disease, should monitor for symptoms.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Kennedy and Deputy Secretary O’Neill as they oversee federal assistance to support South Carolina leaders’ response to the outbreak.
- For wisdom for U.S. and state health officials as they seek to reduce and contain exposure to measles.
